Cow Eye Dissection

Sam came home Tuesday super excited. They would be dissecting cow eyes in science class on Wednesday, and all parents were welcome to come. Sam insisted that we should be there.
Gloves? Yes, please.
The specimen. Bigger than expected! Only slightly bloody.

First step, poke tip of scissor right into the eyeball. The eye was quite thick, and this job was given to the nearest adult. Whose idea was it that parents should be there? Then continue to cut around until the pupil part was cut off. Thankfully the kids took over when it came to the cutting. (Sam, very kindly, let his partner do all the cutting. How very considerate!)

The lens. The instruction was to remove it, and then put it on a very small part of the newspaper. It works like a tiny magnifying glass.

The eyeball turned inside out. The turquoise area is the retina. The blob to the left is the iris.

Sam holding the lens. Notice how clean his gloves are. Not a spec of eyeball goo on them anywhere.

While he said the whole thing was great, in reality, Sam did not get very close to any of it. For most of the time he was up out of his seat, standing several feet away from the eye. But he sure was thrilled that his parents came. I have a feeling there will continue to be more discussion about cow's eyes this evening.

Ready for Rain

Sam and dad went and played at All Star Sports tonight and won some tickets.  Sam said that he has always wanted an umbrella hat.  I asked him if he was ready for a shower at home with his new hat.

I can fix it Felix

Ben went to 2 birthday parties on Saturday.  One party was a costume party in which he went as Felix from Wreck it Ralph, a movie that the boys have enjoyed.

Topkea Get A Way

Sam wanted to tour the state capital so we decided to take a quick stroll up to Topeka.  The weather was cold, so not too many opportunities for outdoor activities, but we did get a nice tour of the capital.

Congrats Sam

Sam was recognized at the WSU game last night for being the student with the most books read at his school.  This was quite an honor.  It was a program called "Read With WU".  Sam said he was a little nervous, but handled the "pressure" like a pro.  He even dunked on Evansville!

OKC Trip

The boys did not have school Monday or Tuesday so we decided to take a little road trip to Oklahoma City.  On Sunday, the weather was beautiful, so we started out at the zoo for a little while.  After the zoo we went to the Lego store at the mall.  We could have just gone to the Lego store alone and the trip would have been complete.

Ben is a flirt.  There were seven teenage girls celebrating a friend's birthday.  The all fell in love with Ben.  Here he is, hanging out with the "girls".  All of the girls got their picture taken with Ben as well.  This was quite hilarious to watch.

Sam wanted to go to the bombing memorial.  The boys both asked lots of questions trying to understand exactly what happened and why.  We all can remember what we were doing when this even occurred.

We've done about everything in Oklahoma City on trips past, but we have not been to the skeleton museum.  This museum got rave reviews on tripadvisor.com, so we decided to check it out.  The owner of the museum has two floors of about every skeleton you can think of.  Sam and Ben are standing in front of a hippo in this picture.

Symphony Time

We were blessed with some free tickets to the symphony last night.  We had a great time.  There was a mime who was the special guest artist.  The comedy and antics were great.  This was Ben's first Wichita symphony and he did great.  It was a late night, home around 10:30 and to bed by 11:00.

A Mild and Wild Day

The weather was really nice today, so we decided to go to the zoo for a while.  Some of the animals were inside for a while including the two elephants.  Apparently, they enjoy watching TV.
